Preparing for a Funeral

Losing someone is never easy. At Status Funerals International, we understand how overwhelming it can feel to plan a farewell that honours life with dignity and love. This guide is designed to help you—step by step—with practical advice and compassionate support.

What to Do Immediately After a Loved One Passes

If the death occurs in a hospital

If your loved one passes away in hospital, the staff assist with notifying a physician and completing medical documentation. We can coordinate with hospital administration to transfer the body, arrange legal papers, and begin the planning process.

If the death occurs at home or in a care facility

Contact the attending doctor, who must certify the cause of death if natural. They will issue the necessary documentation for burial or cremation. Staff at care or nursing facilities are often able to assist with initial steps.

If the death is unexpected

In cases where medical supervision or care was not in place, you may need to involve emergency services, the attending doctor, or law enforcement (SAPS) to investigate and issue appropriate paperwork.

Death overseas or away from home

Regardless of where your loved one passes away, we provide repatriation services to bring them home with dignity. We’ll help you navigate international regulations, transport logistics, and required documentation.

Key Considerations in Funeral Preparation

Selecting a coffin or casket

Caskets come in various materials, styles, and price ranges—wood (solid or veneer), eco / biodegradable options, and more. Your budget, preferences, and any instructions left by the deceased will guide the choice.

Coffin adornments & personalization

Flowers, flags, photos, keepsakes, or favorite items may be placed in or on the coffin to reflect your loved one’s personality. Please note: for cremations, certain items may need to be removed for safety or environmental reasons; we will respectfully return them to you.

Dressing, make-up & viewing options

Many families find meaning in dressing their loved one in clothing they enjoyed. We offer make-up and styling services to provide a peaceful appearance for viewing, if desired. Viewing is optional—some families prefer it, others do not—and we fully support both choices.

Order of service, music & ceremony

Music, readings, eulogies, and ceremony structure all contribute to the tone of the farewell. Whether you prefer traditional hymns or contemporary songs, we’ll assist in building a meaningful program, in booklet or digital format.

Floral tributes & memorial elements

Floral arrangements—bouquets, wreaths, coffin sprays—are customary and symbolic. We can help source custom tributes. In addition, headstones or memorial masonry can be arranged; contact us for quotes and options.

Documentation & legal requirements

Legal paperwork is a vital part: death registration, burial or cremation permits, municipal approval, and possible coroner’s oversight (in certain cases). We assist in managing all the documentation so you don’t carry this burden alone.

Personalizing the Farewell

Tributes that reflect the life lived can bring comfort to family and friends. Consider:

Displaying photo galleries or memory boards

Sharing video tributes or slide shows

Inviting personal stories or letters

Incorporating meaningful items (such as religious symbols, hobbies, keepsakes)

Symbolic gestures: lighting candles, releasing balloons (where permitted), planting a tree, etc.

These elements help make the service unique and deeply personal.
